How to use WalkSaigon Maps

Ho Chi Minh City is hard to navigate and the conditions can quickly drain you of energy. Follow these tips to get the best out of your stay and hopefully return soon.

Get up early, stay up late, but rest from 11am to 2pm

Split your day into two halves: The morning and afternoon. The simple reason for this is the action, weather, and activities available. With sunrise at around 5:30am, most of the walks are best in the morning to enjoy local markets when they are busy, the weather is favorable, and it is pleasant to explore city streets.

Tourist sites, banks, schools, and other services often close for some part of lunch from around 11am to 1:30pm. Follow the same schedule. It is too hot to march around the city on foot. Spend that time eating an early lunch, having a nap, lounging by your hotel pool, and start again in the afternoon at 3pm.

With sunset at about 6:00pm year round, 3 to 8pm is also a great time to walk a bit and beat the heat at coffee shops or eating some local snacks. The early evening brings a lot of open stalls that set up for the afternoon and early evening.

Weird Hours

Most stalls and local restaurants are not open all day. Stalls usually operate in either the morning or evening and can sometimes move locations. A side street or corner can be dead and devoid of life in the AM but be the center of the action from the afternoon onwards.

Starting points

Walks can be started from either end although there is usually one place like a temple or historical site at the start. In some cases, there is a local restaurant. Coffee and quick snack spots are listed on the way or at the end so after a bit of walking, there is a chance to rest before continuing exploring.
